TYPICAL POSITIONS. Correctional officer, psychologist, physician, nurse, chaplain, correctional/drug treatment specialist, safety specialist, teacher, program officer, vocational instructor, and others.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS. Applicants must be (1) be U.S. citizen; (2) be less than 37 years of age (although for some hard-to-fill positions an age waiver may be granted); (3) successfully complete an employee interview; (4) pass a physical examination; and (5) pass a field security investigation. Correctional officer candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS. Successful completion of in-service training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy at Glynco, Georgia.

SALARY. Correctional officers are appointed at the GS-5 level, while six months or more of graduate education in criminal justice or any social science may qualify the applicant for the GS-6 level or higher. A correctional officer may be advanced to the next higher pay grade level after six months of satisfactory service.
